Frequently Asked Questions About Fotspor

What is Fotspor and what is it used for?

Fotspor is a two-part application. In the authoring tool, you can create your own digital walks and nature trails with content such as text, images, audio, video, and quizzes. These routes are shared with others through our mobile app using a share code. Depending on which route type is used, different rules apply for how content can be opened.

The Fotspor app is free for participants. The route creator chooses the subscription needed to create routes.

Fotspor offers:

  • Basic subscription: a free plan with core features for creating routes.
  • Fotspor Plus: an extended subscription with features such as video, audio, quizzes, response collection, leaderboards, and an improved route planning tool.

The app is available on both iOS and Android devices.

What route types are available, and what is the difference?

Fotspor currently has four route types.

Nature Trail

Nature Trail is the most popular route type. Checkpoints must be opened in a specific order, and GPS is used to unlock the next checkpoint when the user is nearby. Only the next checkpoint, together with previously visited checkpoints, is visible on the map.

Historical Walk

Historical Walk works in the same way as Nature Trail, where checkpoints must be visited in order and are unlocked when the user is nearby. The difference is that all checkpoints are visible from the start. This can be useful for optional routes, so users can assess time and distance before they begin.

Treasure Hunt

Treasure Hunt hides all checkpoints (except the first one) on the map until the user is within range. The idea is that route creators leave hints about where the next checkpoint is. Checkpoints must be visited in order.

Open Checkpoints

Open Checkpoints can be opened from any location, in any order. This is useful for highlighting points of interest and adding multimedia content, or for testing routes without physically walking them.

What data do we collect?

We only collect data that is necessary to operate our services.

The Fotspor app does not collect directly identifying participant data such as name, email address, or phone number. Instead, it uses a pseudonymous app-specific device ID and technical information needed to deliver the service and ensure stable operation.

We do not sell personal data and do not share personal data with third parties for their own marketing or profiling purposes.

For a full overview of what data is processed and how it is used, see the Fotspor Privacy Policy.

Which third-party services does Fotspor use?

Fotspor uses the following services to provide functionality:

  • Here Maps: satellite map layer.
  • OpenStreetMap: standard map layer.
  • Firebase (Google): storage of route data and app operations.
  • Vimeo: video material.
  • PostHog: analysis of editor usage (with consent where required).
  • OpenAI: AI functionality in the editor during active use.

Read more about how these services are used in the Fotspor Privacy Policy.

What is Fotspor Plus?

Fotspor Plus is our way of giving route creators more, so they can build better experiences more easily.

Fotspor Plus extends the free plan with additional content options such as:

  • AI-assisted route creation (beta)
  • Video
  • Audio
  • Quiz
  • Response collection (New in 2026)
  • Leaderboards (New in 2026)

You also get planning tools that make it easier to estimate how long the route takes to walk and how many kilometers it covers.

Depending on the agreement, the code may be tied to a specific email domain, for example a school domain.

How does quiz work in Fotspor?

Route creators can add quiz questions to checkpoints in a route. If the route has an active session, the system can register responses, calculate scores, and show results in a leaderboard.

What is a quiz session?

A session allows you to collect responses from routes that contain quizzes.

With a session, you can:

  • collect responses from participants
  • show leaderboards
  • follow results while the route is in progress

You can create multiple sessions for the same route, for example for different classes or events.

For a full step-by-step walkthrough, see the Sessions guide.

How many participants can join one session?

For schools and individuals, the normal limit is:

  • up to 50 participants per session
  • if a user runs the route again, they are counted as a new participant
  • one session can last up to 7 days.

For businesses and organizations with needs beyond this, participant limits and session duration can be adjusted through an agreement.

How do leaderboards and live updates work?

When a quiz session is active, and the leaderboard setting is enabled, participants can see their own and others' positions in a leaderboard.

The leaderboard can be shown both during the route and after the route is completed. This behavior is configurable in the session's settings.

How long are the answers kept?

The answers and the leaderboard are normally deleted automatically one year after the session was created. The answers are also deleted if the session or the answer is manually deleted by the route creator before that time.
